Point and shoot cameras?

So, I have a Nikon D70 DSLR with some nifty lenses and gadgets and whatnot, and I love her most of the time. BUT, I really need a small point and shoot to hand over to Michael for field trips with Landon or to Avery for fun activities with her friends. And sometimes, you just don't want to haul the big honkin' camera bag around.

I'm having a hard time finding one that I will love. It needs to have some decent optical zoom on it...at least 6x. Megapixels aren't nearly as important to me...most cameras are sufficient in that area. Obviously quality is important. I don't really care about video, but I'd like some different built-in focus features, timer, ability to use fill-flash, etc.

Any suggestions?? I'm not concerned about price really because if it's THE camera, I'll have it for a while and will get my money's worth out of it.

Bryan and I were looking for a camera small enough to fit in a pocket (for vacations and such). This is what I found and we absolutely love it.

I have the Sony Cyber Shot DSC T100

It the camera I used for my Cancun trip and it was and still is a great small camera. I have no complaints yet and I have had it for nearly 9mos. I have it in my purse at all times for those "you never know" moments. Love it.

It has to be a Panasonic Lumix. With 10x optical zoom, even I can take great pics with it. They are as clear as a bell and easy to view on the large viewscreen. These cameras have won loads of awards and we are on our second (the first one met with a nasty accident, sigh!). I would never buy any other camera again.

I must second Ms. Anonymous - I bought a "full-size" Panasonic Lumix over 3 years ago after alot of research and have LOVED it absolutely ever since (and several family members followed suit after seeing mine). They recently came out with a pocket version of the big one, which hubby gave me for my birthday. Not as good for indoor shots as my big one, but an excellent camera overall. There are a lot of different models, so look carefully to find exactly what you're looking for. They have 12x zoom, image stabilization, and much more.

I don't know if you've made a camera decision yet, but here are two that I own and love.

Nikon Coolpix P80 - has 18x OPTICAL zoom! Plus digital zoom of course.

I have to agree with the gals that listed Canon's. I have a few friends that are professional photographers, and their main cameras are all Nikons, but they all carry a small Canon with them. I just sent my sil a list of some too, and I'm going to be getting myself one since my dh has my p&s with him up in Alaska for a few months.

Any of their digital ELPH ones are amazing. Here is a link to one of the new ones:

This is probably the one that I'm going to get!!
